Our Guatemalan Itinerary

Photo-Rio DulceOur plane landed in Guatemala City. From there we traveled by van east, to the Rio Dulce River near the Caribbean coast (see the map, below). On the way we stoped to visit the ruins at Quirigua, site of the largest stellae in the Mayan world. Boarding a small boat, we continued our journey down the river to Livingston, on the coast of the Gulf of Honduras. Lo De En Medio is just north of Livingston a short distance into the rainforest from the coast.
In Lo De En Medio, we stayed in the homes of our Mayan hosts, who had never had visitors from the U.S. before. We shared their daily life and worked with them to renovate their schoolhouse. The service project was coordinated by Ak'Tenamit, a grass roots development project for health, education and economic development in the Rio Dulce area.
After five days in the village, the group returned to central Guatemala stopping in Antigua, the old capital, before returning to the US on April 6.
